Advanced Endoscopy Q & A

  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS): Endoscopic ultrasounds allow your doctor to obtain an ultrasound image of your digestive tract and its surrounding area.
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): In an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, your doctor inserts an endoscope through your mouth and into your digestive tract.
  • Balloon Endoscopy: A balloon endoscopy uses the assistance of balloons to allow the endoscope to travel deeper into the small intestines.
  • Cancer
  • Pancreatitis
  • Abnormalities in your gallbladder and liver
  • Gallbladder stones
  • Problems in the small intestine

Your gastroenterologist will give you a sedative to help you relax during the procedure. Once the sedative takes effect, your doctor may have you lay on your side or back on the table.

They spray a numbing agent in your throat and place a plastic mouth guard. Your gastroenterologist then inserts the endoscope through your mouth and into your digestive tract. The next course of action depends on the procedure your doctor’s performing. They may take pictures, remove polyps, or perform a variety of other functions.
