Colonoscopy

Colonoscopies are the most accurate exam available for the detection and prevention of colon and rectum cancers. It has literally saved lives and is highly recommended for everyone. Most people get their first screenings around the age of 50; however, it is best to consult with your primary care physician, especially if you feel like you are already showing signs of cancer or if you have a family history of colon or rectum cancer.

Colonoscopy Q & A

A colonoscopy is an exam used to detect changes in the large intestine (colon) and rectum.

If you have unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms like abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, or chronic constipation or diarrhea, a colonoscopy allows us to investigate the source of your discomfort.

A colonoscopy poses relatively few risks, such as:

  • Adverse reaction to the sedative used
  • Bleeding from the site where a tissue sample (biopsy) was taken
  • A tear in the colon or rectum wall (perforation)
