Upper Endoscopy

Upper Endoscopy procedures focus on the examination of the upper digestive system (esophagus, stomach and beginning of the small intestine). If you are experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing and gastrointestinal bleeding, then our board-certified specialist may recommend this in order to find out more.

Upper Endoscopy Q & A

An upper endoscopy, sometimes called an EGD, is a procedure that allows your gastroenterologist to look at your upper digestive tract, including your esophagus, stomach, and the upper part of your small intestine.

During the procedure, your doctor inserts a thin tube called an endoscope into your throat that’s equipped with a light and a camera. The camera image is transmitted to a video screen where your doctor can view the inside of your digestive tract.

If necessary, your doctor can use tools through the endoscope to take a biopsy or remove polyps. They may also stretch or dilate the esophagus.

Your gastroentereologist may recommend an endoscopy procedure to:

  • Investigate signs and symptoms related to the upper digestive system.
  • Diagnose symptoms related to the upper digestive system.
  • Treat symptoms related to the upper digestive system.

By fasting for a minimum of 4-8 hours before the procedure, ensuring your stomach and digestive tract are empty. This will give your gastroenterologist a more accurate image of the inside of your upper digestive system.
